A Player Advantage Glossary
Accounts Payable
Accounts Payable refers to a company’s short-term liabilities due to purchasing goods or services on credit from suppliers. This is a crucial component of a company’s cash flow management. Efficient handling of accounts payable ensures that a business maintains healthy relationships with its suppliers, avoids late payment penalties, and optimizes its cash flow, which is vital for scaling up operations.
Example
Imagine a rapidly growing tech company that has secured several large contracts to deliver software solutions. The company purchases hardware, software licenses, and consulting services from various suppliers on credit to meet these demands. These purchases create accounts payable. If the company manages its accounts payable efficiently—by taking advantage of early payment discounts or negotiating favorable credit terms—it can keep more cash on hand.
This additional cash can be reinvested into scaling efforts, such as hiring more developers or expanding its marketing campaigns, without the need for additional external financing. However, if the company delays payments unnecessarily or mismanages its payables, it could strain relationships with suppliers, leading to potential supply chain disruptions and increased costs, hindering its growth momentum.
