BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)

A Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is a long-term, ambitious target that an organization commits to achieve within 10 to 25 years. BHAG is a visionary goal that challenges the organization to push beyond its current capabilities and achieve something that is both audacious and inspiring. This concept is critical to driving sustained growth and maintaining a sharp focus on the future.

The BHAG should be clear and compelling, serving as a unifying focal point for team efforts and a beacon that guides strategic decision-making. It is designed to align the organization’s people, strategy, and execution around a shared purpose, encouraging innovation and resilience as the organization scales.

Example

One notable example of a BHAG comes from Amazon. When Amazon was primarily an online bookstore, its BHAG was to become “”the world’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online.””

This goal was not only bold but required Amazon to expand far beyond books, eventually transforming it into a global e-commerce giant. The BHAG provided Amazon with a clear vision, driving it to continually innovate and expand its offerings to meet this audacious goal, ultimately shaping its current position as a leader in various industries.
