Churn Rate
Churn Rate refers to the percentage of customers or employees who leave a company over a specific period of time. This metric measures a business’s sustainability and growth potential. A high churn rate can indicate underlying issues within the company, such as customer dissatisfaction, poor product-market fit, or internal organizational problems, making it difficult to scale effectively.
Example:
Imagine a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company that has 1,000 customers at the beginning of the month. By the end of the month, 50 customers have canceled their subscriptions. The churn rate for that month would be calculated as:
Churn Rate=(Number of Customers Lost /Total Customers at Start of Period)×100
So, the churn rate would be:
(50/1000)×100=5%
This 5% churn rate means the company needs to acquire new customers at a rate higher than 5% per month to grow. If this churn rate is consistent, it could hinder the company’s ability to scale, as the efforts to replace lost customers could outweigh the efforts to acquire new ones.
